Background of the Study

Green spaces, including parks, gardens, and urban forests, play a crucial role in enhancing mental well-being by providing opportunities for relaxation, physical activity, and social interaction. Research indicates that access to green environments reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, while also improving cognitive function and overall quality of life (American Psychological Association [APA], 2024). In urban settings, green spaces contribute to environmental sustainability, promoting cleaner air, temperature regulation, and biodiversity conservation (United Nations Environment Programme [UNEP], 2023).

Katsina State, located in northwestern Nigeria, has witnessed rapid urbanization, leading to increased land use for infrastructure at the expense of natural green areas. Despite the recognized benefits of green spaces, many urban centers in Katsina lack adequately maintained parks or recreational areas, limiting residents’ access to nature. The mental health burden in Nigeria has been on the rise, with growing concerns over stress-related disorders, particularly in densely populated urban areas (Nigeria Mental Health Association [NMHA], 2024).

Given the role of green spaces in enhancing psychological well-being, there is a need to evaluate their availability, accessibility, and impact on mental health in Katsina State. This study aims to assess the extent to which urban green spaces contribute to mental well-being and identify policy recommendations for urban planning and environmental conservation.

Statement of the Problem

Urbanization and population growth in Katsina State have led to diminishing green spaces, reducing opportunities for recreational and psychological relief. The lack of parks and open spaces in urban areas contributes to increased stress levels, social isolation, and a decline in overall mental well-being among residents (APA, 2024). Research has shown that green spaces positively influence mood, reduce psychological distress, and enhance cognitive performance, yet they remain an underutilized resource in Nigerian cities (UNEP, 2023).

Despite these benefits, limited studies have explored the relationship between green spaces and mental well-being in Katsina State. Urban planning strategies often prioritize infrastructure over environmental sustainability, neglecting the importance of preserving natural landscapes. This study seeks to evaluate the role of green spaces in promoting mental well-being and advocate for policies that integrate greenery into urban development plans.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the availability and accessibility of green spaces in Katsina State.
  2. To examine the impact of green spaces on the mental well-being of urban residents.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of urban planning policies in integrating green spaces for psychological health benefits.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current state of green spaces in Katsina State, and how accessible are they to residents?
  2. How do green spaces influence stress reduction and mental well-being among urban populations?
  3. What urban planning policies exist to promote the inclusion of green spaces, and how effective are they?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Increased access to green spaces leads to improved mental well-being and reduced stress levels among urban residents in Katsina State.
  2. The lack of green spaces in Katsina contributes to higher rates of stress-related disorders and social isolation.
  3. Effective urban planning strategies that prioritize green spaces can significantly enhance psychological health in urban areas.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on urban centers in Katsina State, assessing green space availability and its impact on mental health. Limitations may include difficulty in quantifying mental health improvements solely attributed to green spaces and potential variations in accessibility across different demographic groups.

Definitions of Terms

  • Green Spaces: Public areas with vegetation, such as parks and gardens, that provide environmental and recreational benefits (UNEP, 2023).
  • Mental Well-being: A state of emotional, psychological, and social well-being that enables individuals to cope with stress and function effectively (APA, 2024).
  • Urban Planning: The process of designing and regulating land use in cities to ensure sustainable development and livable environments (NMHA, 2024).
